Posty Posty

This past weekend was the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. Every year this thing gets bigger, and every year they hold it at the same venue (Stampede round up center, the small side). I hope that next year they realize how many people actually show up to this event (this years est. 150,000) and host it somewhere bigger. Despite the attendance of several Twilight actors, the expo was not run over by screechy twi-hards...and thank goodness for that. There were however numerous "...and then Buffy staked Edward. The End" t-shirts.

Boy decided to get his picture taken with Leonard Nimoy, so obviously I tagged along. The down side was the line...

It stretched all the way down the Round-up center and out the door, ending near the C-train station... crazyness. My friend Jackie got to hand pound Nimoy though, which was pretty cool. Boy also shook Malcolm McDowell's hand, and then got yelled at by his agent. I was in the ladies room while all this happened...stupid bladder...

Part of the festivities was a special screening of "A Clockwork Orange" with an introduction and Q&A by Malcolm Mcdowell. I had never seen the movie so it was an experience. I don't know if it lived up to all the hype pop-culture gave it. It's basically a movie about an asshole who uses the system to his own advantage...Boy says the book is better, but the book is ALWAYS better.

As far as loot goes I bought myself a few graphic anthologies, some stickers, tickets to Dr Horrible Live, and a few DVDs... like Tokyo Zombie... Oh and the entire animated series of Tintin!!! Also a giant Totoro that double as a hand muff or purse... I use it as a cushion and keep candy in it's head.

Other things I have been up to? Crocheting Ruby hats...

Personally I think its the greatest thing ever, I didn't use a pattern so it's a little big so I'm going to felt it to shrink it a bit. She doesn't like wearing it and keeps shaking her head when I put it on her, so she looks like the gimpiest unicorn there ever was... I have a feeling that this is beginning of a hilarious series.

I also made Hello Kitty pound cake

Pound cake is super easy to make and it plays really well with other flavours... like nutella or jam.

Mandy's Pound Cake recipe
(adapted from somewhere, now existing as a post-it note on my fridge)

1 cup butter
(I've used as little as 3/4 cup, but it does make a difference in moistness and flavour)
2 cups flour
1.5 cups sugar
(I've cut this down to 1 cup with not much difference)
3 eggs
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup milk
1-2 tsp vanilla

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees
  2. Cream together butter and sugar until it combined and resembles wet sand
  3. Mix dry ingredients together (you can sift, I'm lazy) in one bowl, mix wet ingredients together in another bowl
  4. Alternate adding dry ingredients to the butter/sugar mixture with the wet, make sure your last addition is some of the dry stuff
  5. Fill your pan or muffin tins or Hello Kitty baking molds 2/3 full
  6. Bake 1 hour or until a toothpick pricked in the middle of whatever you're baking comes out crumb free
  7. Cool, slice and enjoy with something sweet and spreadable

Pseudo- Ruby Tuesday

I meant to do a post last night, but i couldn't find the camera USB cord... I found it this morning, in the most moronic place (Boy's bedside table) so I'll do a real post tonight. But for right now, here's a picture of my dog doing her best French Bulldog impression!

Alright... so she's running...she's also a black blob...

Here's a better picture of the epic cuteness...

We are on day 2 of no house breaking accidents... I hope this winning streak continues....

Earthday

So I didn't even know it was earth day until this afternoon so I can't say that I'm really observing... but this video is too cute not to post... maybe I'll invest in some bio-degradable poops bags when my plastic stash has run out...

Bitch be Crazy!

So it’s been about one week with Ruby, and so far so good… I think. The addition of a dog in my life comes with a side order of structure and schedules. I have to get up earlier and go to sleep at a regular time if I want the dog to do the same. This also means regular wake up calls to the Boy to ensure he gets up in time to deal with the dog before he has to go to work too.

Ruby has so far been a pretty cool pup, she doesn’t bark at the door, she’s about 80% house broken (she knows that she’s supposed to go in her litter box, she just prefers carpet >_<), she loves new people and she’s not super food-obsessed ( I expect this to change as she gets older, she is a pug after all). The only thing we’re really struggling with is her incessant barking when left alone (or out of sight of a person). When I come home from work, she’s all quiet doing her own thing, it’s only when she see’s me that she freaks out in her little gated area (aka the guest bathroom), and doesn’t calm down until I let her out or I leave her line of sight, it’s like, she can’t handle the fact that someone is around and she can’t follow them like the little velcro dog she is. She also has a wee nipping problem. She’s really good at not biting or mouthing most of the time, but when she’s tired or super excited, her teeth come out. She actually got Boy in the nose on Sunday night, and it was a scary moment.

I took her to a puppy class on Tuesday night, but we were the only one’s there. No other puppy’s showed up. Ruby needs to socialize with other dogs, otherwise she’ll grow up fearful of other dogs and people, playing with other dogs is also supposed to help with the nipping. I’m going to see if I can borrow my friend Adam’s family dog, Noah, a Portuguese waterdog like the Obama’s Bo, this weekend for a few hours.

Ruby’s Quirks:

  • She can’t sit on the laminate floor, she sits down but her butt slowly slides backwards and so she kinda has a little butt scoot

  • She’s pretty opportunistic about finding laps to nap in or feet to rest her chin on, this has resulted in us stepping on her a few times…ooops!

  • Everytime I take her out for a walk someone will kneel down to pet her or ask to pick her up. I tied her up outside Starbucks for like, 5min, and at least 7 people stopped to pet her… crazy popular dog

  • She’s afraid of going down stairs, not going up, just going down

  • Not interested in sniffing trees where others dogs have marked or sniffing other dogs poo

This Sunday there is a puppy meetup at a fenced off leash park, I really want to take Ruby but I have to pick up my Grandma from Church, hopefully I can drop Grandma off in time to take Ruby.

I just gave her a bath...I think she's afraid of the hair dryer...

Blurgh

Mildly hungover in a hotel room in Richmond drinking pomegranate tea.

That is all...
