This past weekend was the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. Every year this thing gets bigger, and every year they hold it at the same venue (Stampede round up center, the small side). I hope that next year they realize how many people actually show up to this event (this years est. 150,000) and host it somewhere bigger. Despite the attendance of several Twilight actors, the expo was not run over by screechy twi-hards...and thank goodness for that. There were however numerous "...and then Buffy staked Edward. The End" t-shirts.
Boy decided to get his picture taken with Leonard Nimoy, so obviously I tagged along. The down side was the line...
It stretched all the way down the Round-up center and out the door, ending near the C-train station... crazyness. My friend Jackie got to hand pound Nimoy though, which was pretty cool. Boy also shook Malcolm McDowell's hand, and then got yelled at by his agent. I was in the ladies room while all this happened...stupid bladder...
Part of the festivities was a special screening of "A Clockwork Orange" with an introduction and Q&A by Malcolm Mcdowell. I had never seen the movie so it was an experience. I don't know if it lived up to all the hype pop-culture gave it. It's basically a movie about an asshole who uses the system to his own advantage...Boy says the book is better, but the book is ALWAYS better.
As far as loot goes I bought myself a few graphic anthologies, some stickers, tickets to Dr Horrible Live, and a few DVDs... like Tokyo Zombie... Oh and the entire animated series of Tintin!!! Also a giant Totoro that double as a hand muff or purse... I use it as a cushion and keep candy in it's head.
Other things I have been up to? Crocheting Ruby hats...
Personally I think its the greatest thing ever, I didn't use a pattern so it's a little big so I'm going to felt it to shrink it a bit. She doesn't like wearing it and keeps shaking her head when I put it on her, so she looks like the gimpiest unicorn there ever was... I have a feeling that this is beginning of a hilarious series.
I also made Hello Kitty pound cake
Pound cake is super easy to make and it plays really well with other flavours... like nutella or jam.
Mandy's Pound Cake recipe
(adapted from somewhere, now existing as a post-it note on my fridge)
1 cup butter
(I've used as little as 3/4 cup, but it does make a difference in moistness and flavour)
2 cups flour
1.5 cups sugar
(I've cut this down to 1 cup with not much difference)
3 eggs
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup milk
1-2 tsp vanilla
- Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees
- Cream together butter and sugar until it combined and resembles wet sand
- Mix dry ingredients together (you can sift, I'm lazy) in one bowl, mix wet ingredients together in another bowl
- Alternate adding dry ingredients to the butter/sugar mixture with the wet, make sure your last addition is some of the dry stuff
- Fill your pan or muffin tins or Hello Kitty baking molds 2/3 full
- Bake 1 hour or until a toothpick pricked in the middle of whatever you're baking comes out crumb free
- Cool, slice and enjoy with something sweet and spreadable
